Angeles City

The Philippines is indeed a strange country. Whilst imbibing in Midnight Rock one night, I was visited by the local police, who came to ask me if I could donate something for their annual party. I enquired how much. "It's up to you," they replied. They informed me that it did not have to be money, it could be anything for their party. I gave them a Midnight Rock T-shirt, a copy of my Shotgun Boogie CD and a bottle of whisky, and they went away quite contented.

On another occasion, I received a call asking if I could donate something for the police station, because they were building new detention cells. Again, they told me it doesn't have to be money, some other bars were giving cement, others iron bars, and still others were actually assisting with the building. Well, as anybody who knows me will testify, I am no builder, so I decided to give them some cash instead. They were so pleased with my gesture that they invited me to the flag raising ceremony, where I was awarded with a certificate in recognition of my donation. I duly attended this somewhat bizarre event and was surprised to find that I was the only foreigner there. (Surprise, surprise!)

The Chief of Police saluted me and handed me a certificate bearing the following words: “This is a letter of appreciation awarded to Midnight Rock for their kind donation for construction of the detention cells in Police Station 4, Angeles City, dated 17 August 2009.” It was signed by Ronaldo Lorenzo, Police Chief Inspector. The mind boggles! The certificate duly adorns the wall at Midnight Rock, next to my poster of Elvis’ Jailhouse Rock.
